Quetzal Guerrero
Quetzal Guerrero isn't likely to forget his first day serving as a core warrior on "The New World."
The Phoenix-born performer, musician, and artist brought a sketch pad along to the set, so he could take advantage of the down time between scenes. His drawings from the production, some of which are collected here, served as a sort of visual diary from Guerrero's first film experience.
"Being on set for those two months really took me back to that time before the Europeans had set foot on this continent," says Guerrero, who was recruited to the project by fellow cast members Raoul Trujillo and Rulan Tangen. "It was a powerful and surreal feeling."
Fred Ortiz
Fred Ortiz was sitting in a restaurant in Richmond, Virginia, when a woman approached him with a proposition. "We need guys like you," she told him...
The Texas-born architect was soon cast as a Native American extra on The New World. "I was advised to bring something to keep me busy while waiting to get on set," Ortiz says. "It didn't take long for me to locate a sketchbook. Ive been drawing most of my life... since I was eight or nine."
Looking back on his first Hollywood experience, Ortiz says "I met a lot of great people. I will always recall Terrance Mallick's creative energy, his spontaneity, and his attention to detail. And I will always cherish my sketc book."
